Let's talk about health literacy

Health literacy is everyone's responsibility

What is health literacy?

Health literacy is about finding, understanding and using information to promote and maintain good health.

Health literacy affects all of us. We use it every day when reading a medicine label, attending an appointment, completing a form, understanding test results, or finding reliable health information online. Health literacy helps people make informed decisions about their health.

Health literacy is not just about an individual's skills. It is also about how clearly organisations communicate and how easy services are to find and use.

Health literacy matters

More than 1 in 4 adults

in Ireland have limited health literacy.

1 in 3 adults

only sometimes ask for an explanation when they do not understand health information.

More than 1 in 3 adults

have taken the wrong dose of medication at least once.

Almost 1 in 2 adults

are embarrassed to ask for an explanation if they do not understand.

What can I do?

For the public
For professionals and organisations

Let's keep talking about health literacy
