Adult reading circles in Wexford nominated for an Award

March 05, 2026

We are delighted to share that the Wexford Adult Reading Circles for new readers initiative has been selected as an Island of Ireland Regional & Country Finalist for the Library of the Year at the British Book Awards.

This initiative was developed through strong collaboration between Wexford Library, Adult Literacy for Life (ALL), Waterford and Wexford ETB, and the members of the Waterford Wexford Regional Adult Literacy Coalition. It is a great example of people working together to support adult literacy in our communities.

The adult reading circles are currently underway in Gorey, Wexford Town and New Ross.  They provide welcoming spaces for new readers and adults whose first language is not English. Reading circles help learners to build their confidence and enjoy reading together.

Edel Finan , Waterford and Wexford Regional Literacy Coordinator, and Yvonne Smith, Senior Executive Librarian in the Wexford County Council Library Service spoke about the initiative on Alan Corcoran’s Morning Mix on Southeast radio. You can listen to the interview at this link. The discussion starts at 1 hour 21 minutes into the show.

Congratulations to all involved in the initiative and best of luck in the final.
