Be money and media savvy – Skills for Life

Raising awareness about financial and media literacy.

Course attendees attending a workshop

“I attended the financial and literacy talks in Lucan library. I really enjoyed both talks and found them very useful and very practical. Thank you!”- Learner

This project aimed to raise awareness about financial and media literacy in South Dublin through a series of workshops.

15 workshops took place in Ballyroan, Castletymon, Clondalkin, Lucan, North Clondalkin and Tallaght libraries between October and November 2024.

286 participants nine workshops on financial literacy and six on media literacy.

Workshops targeted varied audiences for each library branch, including the elderly, vulnerable adults, and residents in economically disadvantaged areas.

Financial expert Aoife Gaffney delivered eight talks on mastering debt management, investments, and retirement planning.

Martina Chapman of Media Literacy Ireland delivered six talks on the STOP, THINK, CHECK method. This technique helped learners navigate the digital world.

Media Literacy Ireland delivered their talks and workshops free of charge.

The National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) provided a media literacy workbook to learners free of charge.

Financial workshops gave attendees a greater understanding of budgeting, saving, and how to withstand financial pressures during a cost-of-living crisis.

Media workshops encouraged learners to build critical thinking skills. It showed them how to evaluate news content, avoid scams, and make informed decisions when consuming media.

Financial and media literacy experts worked together to strengthen partnerships between libraries and community organisations.

Learners were inspired to engage with their local libraries and adult literacy services.
