“The mix of practical and theory in the Climate Literacy for ALL workshops helped the participants develop their understanding of complex topics such as biodiversity loss and the circular economy. Making a t-shirt into a simple tote bag or exploring how to use locally grown herbs and flowers in homemade beauty products demonstrated how we can reduce our impact on the planet.” Sophie Walsh, Programme Coordinator
This project made climate change accessible to non-native English speakers and adults with literacy needs through a series of workshops. Most of the information available on sustainability and the environment is aimed at adults with high literacy levels. This climate literacy course made this information more understandable for everyone.
62 learners attended the course in Kilkenny City Mayfair Library and the Dunmore Civic Amenity Site between September and October 2024.
Workshops covered topics like food waste, fast fashion, biodiversity, and waste management through workshops that combined theory and practice. Course materials, including a Climate Literacy for ALL booklet, were designed according to plain English guidelines.
Workshops helped participants to understand climate change and to learn how they can make a real difference. Tutors inspired learners to make simple changes in their own lives. Holding these events locally also fostered a sense of community and encouraged people to build relationships and share ideas.
Learners can use the Climate literacy for ALL to support their ongoing learning about climate change and sustainability.
