“As a storyteller, I feel it is incredibly important that everyone has some outlet to talk about themselves, and tell their story – whether that be art, music, prose, conversation. I have often found comics to be an ideal outlet, as the mix of pictures and words makes it very simple to engage with and create.”- Facilitator
This project aimed to improve literacy skills through comic-book making classes. The course used storytelling as an engaging entry-point to develop reading and writing skills.
Six learners attended workshops in November 2024, which took place in the Cork Community Art Link (CCAL) building in Cork City.
Comic making classes focused on storytelling, drawing, and digital drawing.
Participants developed a rich visual vocabulary, which helped them learn how to publish a comic book.
Facilitators encouraged learners to bring their own stories to life through collaborative storytelling.
Workshops used verbal and hands on methods to explore various aspects of language and visual culture.
Learners really enjoyed the experience at CCAL. They are now part of a wider community of learners and are eager to take part in other projects. Several want to learn prop-making and drama with CCAL.
Learners wrote and illustrated physical and e-comic books.
