"I thought it was a great trip. I especially liked the exhibitions because I do art. I thought the library was only for reading books, but now I know about everything else I will visit lots more"- Learner
This project raised literacy awareness among library staff. It also aimed to promote library services to adult literacy and English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) learners.
The project took place in the Dun Laoghaire Lexicon Library in November 2024. 15 Literacy and 15 ESOL learners visited the DLR libraries twice.
These visits introduced learners to local library services. Visits allowed learners to provide feedback to library staff about how they could make their services more literacy friendly.
This feedback gave library staff an opportunity to align their literacy awareness development with the Local Literacy Plan 2024. The plan aims to create a learning space for people with literacy difficulties. Library staff will undergo further literacy awareness training to meet the goals outlined in the plan.
Follow up focus groups explored learner experiences and contributed to the further development of the library as a learning space.
Introducing learners to Lexicon library helped them discover resources that promote lifelong learning, literacy, and personal development.
Trips encouraged learners to use library services independently, which built their confidence in using literacy in daily life.
Learner feedback will help library staff embrace a user-friendly approach when engaging with customers.
