Computers for Beginners- Naas & Leixlip Libraries

In-library digital literacy classes for senior citizens.

Learners in Naas library.

“I learnt so much from this course and am looking forward to practising on the tablet.”- Learner

This project provided a series of in-library classes to learners with low levels of digital literacy. These classes encouraged Age Friendly members to begin their digital literacy journeys and become more confident and independent with technology.

Seven learners attended five 2-hour classes in Naas library between October and November 2024.  Nine people took part in four classes at Leixlip Library in October 2024. Each class lasted two and a half hours.

Participants learnt how to use laptops for programmes such as Microsoft Word and were introduced to some library online resources.

Learners explored the benefits of their local library. They discovered a community hub where new skills can be learnt in a friendly setting with many free resources.

Tutors covered various topics, such as

  • how to use Microsoft Word,

  • creating new documents,

  • creating/deleting/renaming folders,

  • naming and saving files, and

  • telling the difference between hardware and software.

For participants, completing a digital literacy course improved their confidence and well-being and encouraged them to continue their learning journey. All attendees said they learnt a huge amount thanks to this course.
