Improving literacy among Traveller women through sewing.

“The learning was done without any discomfort. This was one of the best projects I have completed. I learned so much, the instructors were very organised and included everyone in a very enjoyable class.”- Participant

This project aimed to cultivate literacy and numeracy skills among Traveller women through the craft of sewing.

This project took place in the Bruac premises. 45 members of the Traveller community attended the workshops.

Learners considerably improved their literacy and numeracy skills by cutting fabric and using patterns, budgets, and measurements.

Participants also improved their communication, teamwork, and quality awareness skills by working in a craft-making environment.

Learners made a variety of craft products while focusing on material costs and budgeting, which improved their numeracy skills.

Feedback showed that participants are keen to pursue further opportunities to improve their literacy and numeracy skills.

Three learners joined a QQI Level three-day course after completing the sewing workshops.

Participants felt the learning environment was very enjoyable, which allowed them to develop their skills at their own pace.

Learners were proud to bring home their hard work and show family members what they made.

This project was a collaboration between Bruac Good Shepherd Cork and Cork Traveller Visibility Group (TVG).
