“I really enjoyed the storytelling and having a laugh with the women. I want to do more on my reading and writing.”- Learner
This project provided information workshops and practical supports for parents who have children with additional needs. It also gave participants an opportunity to build their literacy skills by writing stories, which were compiled into a booklet.
The project took place on Friday mornings over a 10-week period in the Kildare Traveller Action office in Newbridge. 13 Traveller women took part in the programme.
Information sessions for parents took place in Celbridge library, Maynooth, and Newbridge library. They covered topics that impact children’s lives, such as autism.
Tutors did a great job creating a safe space. This allowed learners to discuss their past and write about memories from the Traveller community. Learners felt comfortable telling their stories in their own words.
The project ended with the publication of a collection of short stories, called Her Story: Proud of Who We Are. It showcases the stories of Traveller women in Kildare. The booklet will be used in cultural awareness programmes in schools.
Workshops gave community members an opportunity to interact and have fun with each other. This project inspired many participants to continue their literacy journeys.
