Digital Skills for West Cork Islands

Digital literacy training for West Cork Islanders.

“The classes were very informative, and I liked that I could bring my own phone/technology and learn how to use it.” Quote from participant

This project provided digital literacy training to West Cork islanders. Tutors taught basic IT skills in a fun way to help learners engage with technology.

Classes took place in the Sherkin, Cape Clear, and Bere Islands between September and December 2023. Training also aimed to maintain the Island Radio station, which is very important to community members. 71 participants broadened their digital, radio, podcasting, marketing, and visual graphics skills.

Learners explored podcast development using the “Rodecaster” device. They learnt how to conduct interviews and record the oral history of the island. Participants also developed other media skills, like story telling for documentaries and designing promotional material for small businesses.

"We had a lot of laughter" quote from participant on the course.

A collaboration between Comhar na nOilean, Sherkin Island Development Society, Bere Island Project Group, Cork Education and Training Board (CETB), and Comharchumann Chléire Teoranta.
