"English for work is excellent. I would love for the classes to continue."- Learner

This project provided training to GRETB tutors in advance of a new English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programme. It also created materials related to the world of work that enable learners to prepare for jobs and work experience opportunities. The new course went ahead in Oct 2024 and delivered classes on customer service, retail, and CV and interview preparation.

The project took place between July and December 2024 in the Ballaghaderreen Reception Centre. GRETB tutors attended training on the 3 July and 25 September. Programme materials were prepared in September.

69 learners attended the new course, which began in early October. Classes covered topics like health and safety, tools and toolkits, working in kitchens, and retail. It also delivered one-day workshops in food safety, manual handling, applying for safe pass cards, and basic first aid.

The project removed barriers to engagement in the world of work for learners in ESOL classes. Rather than learning ESOL first and industry-specific language later, this course introduced job-specific phrases to learners at all levels.

The project provided additional English language support to learners awaiting resettlement throughout the country. It covered language from the world of work as well as job applications and networking. The course proved invaluable for people taking their first steps in English.

“Translation classes with Néill and using the dictionary was good. The teacher doesn't let us cheat with the phone so it's a new skill!”- Learner
