Family Literacy Enhancement

Improving family literacy through storytelling and cooking.

Feedback about Teach na Daoine's cook and book club

“Great initiative and very inclusive.”- Learner

This project helped parents with literacy needs to develop skills to engage with their children through storytelling and cooking.

The project took place in Mullaghmatt, Monaghan and Monaghan Library, Monaghan Town between July and August 2024.

15 adults and 15 children attended 12 sessions during this 6-week long programme. Two-hour sessions took place twice daily, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

This project delivered engaging and interactive sessions that combined storytelling and food-related family cooking.

Learners improved their numeracy skills through measurements, fractions, sequencing, time management, counting, understanding mixtures, reactions, and processes.

Cooking sessions taught families how to prepare nutritious meals at home, while also building their literacy skills.

Participants improved their digital literacy skills by using tablets in each storytelling session, along with library-based digital tools and resources.

One key outcome was the enhancement of family literacy. Learners developed skills to actively and joyfully interact with their children through activities like storytelling, cooking, and library visits.

High levels of engagement and attendance were strong indicators of how successful the programme was.

Participants feel more confident reading to their children. The sessions also enhanced their understanding of literacy support resources, which ensures future engagement with library services.
