Family Summer Camp – August Family Fun Fest

Literacy-based summer workshops for people using Respond Housing.

Cooking Shot

“Hannah said it was the best camp she went to this summer. She had a great time baking and cooking and would love to do something like this again." Quote from participant

This project organised two summer camps for users of Respond Housing in August 2023. Participants came from varied backgrounds, including Roma families, Ukrainian and Syrian refugees, and senior citizens. Many people cannot afford to send children to summer camps, so this project allowed families to attend for free.

70 parents, guardians, and children went to the summer camp for four mornings/afternoons over 2 weeks. Facilitators created an environment which encouraged wellbeing and creativity. Activities included craft-making, numeracy-based board games, and storytelling. Each parent or guardian also received a literacy activity pack, which they can use at home with their children.

These activities were very beneficial. They made learning fun and allowed parents to build positive connections with their children.

Arts and Crafts Class

"It was a great week and we all had fun as a family and got to know new people especially our neighbours. Thank you very much.” Quote from participant

This project was the result of a collaboration between the Waterford City and County Library Service, the Respond Housing Association, and Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board (WWETB).
