Fingal recovery empowerment and engagement programme (FREE)

Weekly literacy workshops for adults with alcohol and drug dependencies.

Horticulture class

“It’s made me more confident to know that I can move on to the next chapter of my life.” Participant

The FREE programme helps adults facing challenges with alcohol or drug dependency in the community. It operates three days a week and provides literacy workshops every Wednesday that align with participants' interests and needs.

12 learners attended workshops every Wednesday morning for 12 weeks in the Adult Education Service, Balbriggan between September and December 2024.

The programme integrated literacy training into workshops that covered practical skills like cooking, creative writing, horticulture, yoga, skincare, and art. This gave participants an opportunity to improve their functional literacy and gain valuable life skills.

Learners received personalised support and guidance from an Adult Literacy Organiser and a guidance counsellor. They created individualised educational plans to provide tailored support and to set personal goals.

This programme created a supportive environment where participants improved their literacy skills and focused on their personal development and recovery.
