This project was a collaboration between City of Dublin ETB (South Inner City Adult Education Service) and Coolmine Therapeutic Community.
This project promoted health literacy awareness among adults in recovery through a programme that combined physical exercises and nutritional guidance. It inspired participants to live well and eat well. The project also helped learners understand how physical activities, stress management, and good diets are key to recovery.
The project took place over 10 weeks between September and December 2024. One morning in the Coolmine Therapeutic Community on Lord Edward Street and one afternoon in the Markievicz Gym per week.
Between 10 and 12 learners in the Drug Free and Welcome Programmes in Coolmine Therapeutic Community took part in the programme.
Participants used a journal to reflect on how to live well and eat well as they went through the programme. This gave learners the opportunity to personalise their health literacy journey and to prepare sustainable and realistic recovery plans.
Gym sessions also helped learners develop a personalised training programme and instilled a fitness mindset.
An ETB tutor covered the topics on incorporating stress management in daily routines, and how to eat well on a budget.
Learners felt that their knowledge and understanding of health literacy considerably improved thanks to this programme.
Participants honed their ability to make informed decisions about healthy living. Reading, writing, and IT skills noticeably improved as a result.
A short learner testimonial video will be available very shortly.
