Healthy Food at Home

Healthy cooking courses that improve literacy.

Healthy cooking courses to improve literacy.

"I haven’t eaten a takeaway since the Course started. I used to eat 2-3 a week.” Quote from participant

This project developed healthy food courses based on group learning. Course content covered the food pyramid, food shopping and safety, kitchen hygiene, and budgeting.

18 learners attended these courses, which took place in Kilnaleck and Cavan town between September and December 2023. Learners gained an excellent understanding of the nutritional value of food.

Each learner received a hamper containing ingredients and a recipe for dishes covered in the course. Booklets included recipes in an easy-to-read format. Learners who progressed to a certified Food Choice and Health course also received a hand blender.

This project changed eating habits for the better. One learner said he didn't eat a spice bag for 6 weeks. International Protection Applicants (IPAs) improved their English thanks to easy-to-read recipes as well. IPAs are now sharing their knowledge and recipes with families and friends in emergency accommodation.

"Never knew there was so much information on a food label and all the different names for salt.” Quote from participant

This project was the result of a collaboration between Cavan County Local Development and Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB).
