Heritage Literacy

Using local heritage to improve digital skills among older people.

"I was using Word all the time when working, typing up my own correspondence and reports, and I was able to use basic Excel too. Since I retired, I hardly used the computer at all, so got a bit rusty, but now I’m getting back up to speed again, and learning some new features that I wouldn’t have used before. I find it very useful for that reason. Lorraine is very good as she is available to help us all, regardless of our level of experience".- Learner

This project used local heritage to help senior citizens improve their digital literacy skills. It aimed to expose a group of individuals aged 65 and above to computer and online skills in a fun and collaborative way.

10 participants attended classes every Tuesday for two hours at the Men’s Shed room in Littleton, Thurles.

Great progress was made by all participants, especially complete novices who had no prior knowledge of computers. They are more comfortable using laptops and the internet and willing to engage with technology. Many decided to attend other digital literacy classes after completing this project.

"I find it very helpful. The tutor was very helpful, good to get used to using a computer and how it works."- Learner

This project was a collaboration between Moycarkey, Borris, Littleton Men’s Shed and Tipperary Education and Training Board.
