“The course “Irish for Beginners” is new and exciting and innovative and will make Irish accessible to all. Parents will welcome the opportunity to acquire Irish themselves while supporting the children in their learning.” Facilitator
This family literacy project developed and delivered an introductory Irish language and literacy skills programme. The programme is aimed at parents of children whose Irish language skills are holding them back at school.
The Labhair Liom programme and workbook was developed between June and December 2024. Kilkenny Carlow ETB and Glór Ceatharlach provided their expertise in this development.
The workbook and teaching materials are designed for learners who may have a history of early school leaving or unmet literacy needs. The programme focuses on skills needed for learning in the family.
The programme gives adults the literacy skills they need to help their kids with homework.
The course encourages people from abroad to participate in all aspects of Irish life. It is very useful for people with children who would like to work in public sector employment.
Facilitators expect teaching materials will be used yearly with new and existing learners in Kilkenny Carlow’s Adult Literacy service.
