Literacy Champions in the Library

Teaching library staff how to help people with literacy needs.

Stacked books in a library

"This course has opened my eyes to the difficulties encountered by people in normal day to day life.”- Participant

This project aimed to provide library staff with the skills to recognise signs of unmet literacy needs among adults.

Four literacy awareness sessions took place online. Two more in-person session also took place, one in Watch House Cross, Limerick and another in Ennis, Co. Clare.

11 library staff learnt to apply a literacy friendly approach to their work, to better support people with unmet literacy needs.

Laois Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB) tutors gave presentations and put together the content for in-person training sessions.

LCETB tutors also delivered a half-day information session on English for Speakers of another Language (ESOL) services.

Participants all became Literacy Champions upon completion of the project.

Library staff now have a much better understanding of the barriers faced by adults with literacy needs.

Staff will share what they learnt with their colleagues and other local organisations. They will also that ensure communication about library services meets the needs of adults with literacy needs.

Participants can use Plain English in their customer service.

This project was a collaboration Clare County Council and Limerick County and City Libraries.
