Library's for literacy

Community-based literacy  activities in local libraries

Flyer promoting literacy programs with photos of group activities, and text about workshops and services conducted by Ballyhoura Development CLG.

The project partners were

  • Ballyhoura development

  • Limerick and Clare education and training board (LCETB)

  • Limerick city and county libraries

About this project

This project delivered community-based literacy learning through libraries . Library staff and local services worked together to embed literacy in practical activities rather than using traditional classroom methods.

Ballyhoura Development carried out intensive outreach campaigns to recruit participants and ensure activities reached adults who experience barriers to learning.

More about this project

Delivery took place through a mix of

  • community education sessions,

  • workshops, and

  • information sessions.

Project partners hired tutors with specialist expertise to deliver the programme, which covered

  • creative writing,

  • family literacy,

  • health and well-being, and

  • financial information.

Learners also had access to one-to-one support and progression-focused engagement. This allowed participants to learn at a pace and level appropriate to their needs.
