Literacy and Assistive Technology Online Learning Modules

Online resource that helps improve literacy, numeracy, and digital skills.

“What has [been] developed will bring on people's ability to use technology and also make sure people can use a device, app and programme when they want. For years we have relied on staff or family to turn on devices or find the right app or write that email, now we can do it ourselves. I am very proud to be part of this project in a small way as I really believe it is going to make a huge difference to people.”- Pat Flaherty, Literacy Champion

This project developed a sustainable online learning resource that helps people build their literacy, numeracy, and digital skills. These modules aim to provide essential skills by combining traditional teaching methods, guidance on using digital technologies, and learner’s lived experience.

The project took place between July and December 2024 in Roscommon and Galway. Six literacy and numeracy modules were developed and recorded. They will be available for around 2,000 Brothers of Charity users through the My Learning website. The modules address unmet literacy and numeracy needs and raise awareness about assistive technology in this context. This project was innovative as it marked a shift away from traditional paper-based formats.

One communication and three assistive technology modules were developed, which will help tutors, frontline staff, and family members to support learners.

Learners were involved in designing, developing, and delivering module content, ensuring it met audience needs while also providing positive representation.

This digital resource brings together information and advice that empowers people to pursue their learning journey. It provides a consistent approach to helping people with unmet literacy needs, regardless of where they live and their access to tutors.

“I enjoyed showing people how to use TD Snap. It’s a great way to communicate with others. I was very happy to get paid as a tutor to show these devices to others.”- Conor, Literacy Champion

This project was a collaboration between Brothers of Charity Services Ireland – West Region and Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB).
