Workshops were delivered over six days in three locations across south Kerry. The project supported people with unmet financial literacy needs.

MABs delivered the tutoring and Torc Family Resource Centre referred 25 participants who would benefit from participating on this programme.

Healthy Food Made Easy tutors from the HSE gave cooking demonstrations and showed how to reduce food waste.

Local Credit Unions offered information about their services.

Workshops took place during the autumn of 2024 and were aimed at people with gaps in their knowledge, skills and competencies in financial decision making.

The programme included:

  • Managing living expenses

  • Reducing your household bills

  • Feeding your family for less

  • Calculating your household income and expenditure

  • Understanding banking

  • Planning for your financial future.

All participants said they had made or planned changes as a result of completing the course. People increased their confidence with managing finances through learning practical skills. Participants were supported in meal planning and shopping. This support included groceries and food storage items.

Due to the success of this programme, it has now been included into the SICAP programme for 2025. The programme is now an action for south Kerry and has been shared with NEWKD local development partnership.

Cooking and learning!

On the most useful information from the course: “...information about pensions and tax credits – simple instructions about how to best calculate my income and expenditure.”

This project was a collaboration between South Kerry Development Partnership and Torc Community and Family Resource Centre, with further support from local MABS, HSE, and Credit Union partners.
