"It was absolutely amazing, I learnt so much, if it was on again, I would go. The teacher explained everything so well and allowed questions all the time, it has really helped me with my daughter's homework."- Learner
This project helped non-native English speakers develop the skills needed to help primary school children complete their math homework.
People from other countries have difficulty helping with homework as they are not familiar with maths taught through English. Adding, subtracting, division, and multiplication problems are taught differently in various countries. Learning English terms and phrases used in solving maths problems proved extremely beneficial.
The project took place during the Autumn term 2024 in the parent's room of Castaheany National School. Six learners completed the course and went on to attend financial literacy courses in 2025.
The project was innovative in that the language of maths is rarely focused on from the perspective of non-native English-speakers.
