Men’s Shed Digital Literacy Fund

A course to introduce digital skills to older men in Tralee.

Regional Literacy Coordinator Paula Tiller and course attendees.

This project was a collaboration between North East West Kerry Development (NEWKD) and the North Kerry Men’s Shed Network.

This project provided a digital literacy course for older men attached to the NEWKD Men’ Shed.

The course took place in Liber House, Monavalley for three hours every week for nine weeks. Nine men's shed members participated in the course and learnt a lot from a range of digital literacy platforms.

The objectives were set based on discussion and need with the men.

The men learnt a range of digital skills including file management, using a mouse and safely browsing the internet. They discovered how to effectively use search tools and how to navigate the touch screens of their smart phones and tablets.

A range of other skills included using their phone cameras, scanning QR codes and installing apps. Key apps such as online banking were covered and importantly, internet privacy and security was addressed.

The approach to learning was practical hands-on based on “What I see, I do, I remember”.

The course greatly improved the digital literacy skills of attendees.

Learners are sharing their digital knowledge with other members of the Men’s Sheds

This course is the first time that Men’s Shed members came together to take part in a structured learning environment.

70% of the learners chose to continue learning digital skills and move into other classes
