About this project
The project aimed to improve food literacy, well-being, independence, and social connections through cooking. It took place in Knockanrawely Resource Centre over eight weeks in late 2025.
Each week focused on a new recipe. Participants were involved in all stages of food preparation, including planning, cooking, tasting, and cleaning up. Literacy-friendly resources included picture-based recipes and ingredients. Hands-on learning encouraged peer support, problem-solving, and confidence-building.
More about this project
Learners practised their literacy and numeracy skills by using:
cooking terminology,
kitchen maths,
measurements and conversions,
food safety,
food label reading,
balanced diets,
food processing, and
budgeting.
Learning extended beyond the classroom through a WhatsApp group, which promoted communication and digital literacy development. A guidance counsellor ran an Artificial Intelligence (AI) workshop, which tied food literacy with well-being and digital inclusion.
