About this project

This project aimed to improve literacy skills through group singing and community solidarity.

This initiative is part of a nationwide movement that brings people together in communities across Ireland. It uses communal singing in a positive and inclusive manner to help people break down barriers and get to know each other.

Weekly in-person singing workshops took place in Castlebar in Mayo and Doughiska in Galway. Facilitators also received English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) training and literacy awareness training.

Tutors used  group singing, rhythm, repetition, lyrics, and digital tools to support literacy and build confidence.  

Workshops in Galway covered

  • translation tools,

  • YouTube,

  • WhatsApp,

  • QR codes, and

  • Google Maps.  

A resource, Voices United: Singing for Literacy and Connection, was developed.
