About this project
This project developed a food literacy programme through gardening, cooking and shared meals.
Facilitators embedded literacy learning in practical food-growing and cooking activities. The course combined food literacy, health literacy, and climate literacy with community development.
More about this project
Facilitators developed a 12-week Kitchen to Garden curriculum. It combined horticulture, cooking, meal planning, nutrition, and sustainability.
Newbridge family resource centre hosted the course in two six-week blocks. Maynooth university carried out research using gardening diaries, scrapbooks, research workshops and learner self-assessments.
Learners greatly improved their confidence in cooking and growing. They now have stronger planning skills and greater awareness of how to make healthy food decisions.
“The programme created a welcoming space where people learned practical skills, built confidence, and connected with others in a meaningful way.” — Mary Keane, Newbridge family resource centre
