Pages of Possibility

Improving literacy among families through storytelling.

Pages of Possibility

“We're creating spaces where parents and children can embrace the magic that books offer. We’re providing opportunities to learn together, potentially breaking cycles of low literacy and helping nurture that parent child bond”- Librarian

This project aimed to engage families in literacy activities that brought stories to life. It demonstrated how books can create excitement around literacy and encourage people to read for pleasure.

Family literacy workshops have taken place on a weekly basis in Monaghan and Castleblayney libraries since September 2024. Activities are ongoing and workshops are all set to roll out in Clones and Carrickmacross this year.

Literacy-based activities not only focused on language acquisition but cultural integration and community engagement as well.

Parents read aloud, discussed the meaning of stories, and built their vocabulary, which set positive reading behaviors for their children.

The project strengthened bonds between parents and their children through shared reading experiences. It also greatly improved their confidence in supporting their children's literacy journey.

Workshops inspired parents to read more at home and broadened their knowledge of library resources and services.

This project also helped libraires expand their reach in the wider community and increased circulation of children and family materials.

This project was a collaboration between Monaghan County Libraries and Cavan Monaghan ETB.
