“The classes have helped me to improve my knowledge of Sligo and its environs for the purpose of my volunteer activities”- Learner
This project helped Globe House and other IPAS centre residents to read maps, bus schedules, and train timetables. Lessons also covered how to make appointments with healthcare providers and understand prescriptions from doctors.
40 participants attended 52 sessions twice per week between August and December 2024 at the Cranmore Community Centre.
Participants learnt to understand public transport schedules in English. Bus and train routes became part of their lives, helping them get to their places of interest, jobs, and hobbies.
Learners attended a course on map orientation. Most attendees became very familiar with Sligo town locations. Tutors covered cardinal directions as well.
Participants worked with medication translations and learned about GP and hospital visiting information.
Participants made significant progress during the course. They became more confident about navigating Sligo town, communicating with local people, and dealing with problems. Attendants started to feel part of the local community, communicating freely and independently.
