About this project
Rural Citizens was a pilot climate justice programme. It was delivered with Offaly County Council, Laois Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB), and a Local Authority Water Protection Officer.
We shaped the programme with help from local people who wanted to learn more about environmental issues in their area. We focused in particular on local waterways.
More about this project
Staff from the Local Authority Waters Programme led information and discussion sessions on local water quality. They then guided participants through a hands-on activity: monitoring water quality in the Figile Rive in north Offaly.
We explained different sampling methods and showed participants how to use Riverfly and nutrient testing kits. Many participants enjoyed collecting samples and recording insect life and river-bed material.
Staff from Offaly Local Development Company and LOETB attended every session. They helped make the sessions accessible and provided literacy support when needed.
