Sharing Our Stories: Our Traditional Table Recipes and Food Memories

Intergenerational literacy activities focusing on history and traditional recipes.

“I really enjoyed this course each week and would love for it to continue.”- 93-year-old learner

This project promoted intergenerational literacy between secondary school children and senior citizens. Both cohorts wrote about history and traditional recipes, leading to the publication of two booklets: Sharing our Stories and Our Traditional Table.

The project took place in Ennis, Killaloe and various further education and training centres in County Clare.

Over 200 school children and grandparents took part in the Sharing our Stories project. All children attending Boys and Girls National Schools were involved. Students visited grandparents in 20-minute slots to learn about old artifacts, ask questions, share artwork, and engage in writing activities.

62 students, grandparents, and facilitators worked together to compile traditional recipes.

Various generations used their lived experience as material to improve their listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills.

This project valued the life stories of a wide range of people. Participants produce books that not only improved literacy skills, but paid homage to the history and achievements of local communities.
