About this project

This project brought together parents from diverse backgrounds for practical cookery classes focused on healthy meals.

The course combined budgeting, shopping, and healthy cooking into one practical programme.

More about this project

Weekly workshops took place in Ennis  Community  College’s home economics room. Tutor Mairéad O'Brien ran hands-on practice and informal discussions on smart shopping and budgeting.

Facilitators provided air fryers to learners as an incentive to attend the course. This addressed a real need among families with limited access to cooking equipment.

Participants learnt how to cook simple and practical recipes , which greatly improved their health,  family and digital literacy skills.

“Parents were taken aback by how practical the suggestions were from our Tutor. The range of nationalities represented in the class led to experimenting with food from different cultures. Parents thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of tasting meals made by families from Nigeria as the amount of spices were on a different level to what we were used to. Diverse nature of the classes really added to the experience.” - quote from a facilitator
