About this project
Tutors, quality assurance staff and community partners designed a practical course that combines basic DIY skills with everyday numeracy. It aimed to make maths more relevant through real-life activities.
The project team designed a course which will use activity-based learning through:
painting,
measuring,
budgeting, and
household repairs.
The aim was to make numeracy more accessible by embedding it in familiar activities. Learners will use applied maths skills such as measuring, calculating area and volume, and managing costs while completing DIY tasks. The course was designed to meet QQI requirements and support progression to a Level 3 award.
More about this project
The partner organisation ensured that course content reflects real-life needs and is engaging for adult learners.
The project resulted in a course framework that includes learning outcomes, content and assessment approaches.
The course will teach numeracy through activities such as:
measuring spaces,
planning repairs,
budgeting for projects, and
understanding household costs.
While the course has not yet been delivered, it is fully designed and ready for rollout throughout Cavan and Monaghan. The programme is currently unaccredited, with plans to progress to QQI Level 3 validation as a Special Purpose Award. Once validated, it can be shared with other ETBs.
