"It was great to have one to one because in a class it can be a bit daunting if you're not confident using technology."- Learner
This project offered one-to-one sessions to improve digital literacy skills among older adults. It also aimed to improve participant’s confidence when using various devices.
The project took place in Johnston Central Library, Bailieborough Library, and Virginia Library in the Autumn and Winter of 2024. 74 learners attended 81 sessions overall.
Sessions covered functional digital literacy skills like downloading apps, safe online shopping, cybersecurity, and setting up controls on digital devices.
A personalized approach to learning addressed specific digital needs, fostering greater confidence and independence among participants.
Sessions covered the following topics:
- setting up and accessing social media accounts and using WhatsApp,
- setting up online shopping accounts and adding items to baskets,
- deleting photos, videos, and files for more phone storage space, and
- filling in online forms.
Participants felt more confident using their personal devices after each session.
Learners reported they felt much less dependent on family members after attending the sessions.
Sessions ensured participants felt able to engage with online services provided by government departments, utility companies, travel agencies, and supermarkets
