Improving literacy among adults with intellectual disabilities.

"The In:Clusion Project was amazing for Jacqueline. She’s come out of her shell so much! Seeing the group make that booklet and music video? Incredible. It's done them the world of good.”- Facilitator

This project focused literacy development for adults with intellectual disabilities. It provided an interactive programme that combined literacy and numeracy training with art, music, and movement.

20 learners attended classes in the Greencastle Community Centre. The course aimed to improve functional literacy skills, such as reading and understanding instructions, labels, and forms. It also enhanced communication skills, which fostered stronger social connections and a greater sense of belonging in the community.

Learners worked together to craft an original story, called Greencastle Fairies. This was a fantastic demonstration of their literacy and artistic skills. They brought the story to life with vibrant illustrations, which was published as a booklet.

The group also composed their own song, which combined numeracy with rhythmic patterns and musical structure.

Participants also produced a captivating music video, which interpreted their song visually and expressed their literacy and artistic journey.

Participants really enjoyed socialising and engaging with literacy in a safe and welcoming environment.
