The International Cookbook

Promoting family literacy and learning through cooking.

Learners presenting the workbook.

“The course had so much variety and was great fun. We were reading, writing, shopping, taking photos and having food tastings. We collected over 40 recipes for our book!”- Learner

This project allowed parents who share an interest in cooking to improve their literacy, numeracy, digital literacy and language skills. Classes took a functional and thematic approach to literacy, with an emphasis on family life, health, and writing skills.

Eight learners attended classes in the Family room at Esker Educate Together National School, Lucan. Classes were on Friday mornings over a 10-week period. The group was quite diverse in terms of their cultural backgrounds, but they found a common interest in cooking.

Learners wrote and shared recipes, shopping and cooking tips and organised food tastings. They also compiled their work into a cookbook, which greatly enhanced the experience for this group and the school population.

The school celebrated learner’s achievements by launching the cookbook at their Summer Fete. The cookbook demonstrates the value of lifelong learning and how literacy classes can be enjoyable and have real world value.

This project gave learners the opportunity to work on their literacy skills in a creative and thematic way. The students had a great sense of pride in their achievement.

Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Education and Training Board gained a valuable classroom resource in the cookbook, which can be used in other courses and promotional material.
