The Lifetime Learners: Crafting & Connecting

Improving literacy among women through craftwork.

Learners with their craftworks

"What I enjoyed most about the programme was the variety of media used, from the designs down to the finished product, and meeting new people.” - Learner

This project brought women from a variety of backgrounds together to improve their literacy skills. This was done through craftwork like embroidery and crochet. It also helped learners build their digital skills through researching ideas online.

16 learners attended the course in Dundalk, Co. Louth and in Kells, Co. Meath between November and December 2024.

Craftwork included screen printing, sewing, Palestinian cross-stitching, Ukrainian flower crochet, and South African shadow painting. Learners also researched crafts online. Followed spoken or written instructions. Shared information digitally and measured material.

The learners enjoyed the programme and produced a wide range of craft works, which they displayed in an exhibition. Learners bonded very well and developed a respect and understanding of each other's cultures.

Each class had specific conversation topics. The conversational English helped improve many learners English.

This project was a collaboration between Louth and Meath Education and Training Board and Age Action.
