Helping new English speakers address their literacy needs
The project partners were
Offaly county library service
Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB)
About this project
This project created a “third space” in libraries for adult literacy and English for Speakers for Other Languages (ESOL) support. It combined reading for pleasure with language development.
The project positioned the library as a free, welcoming access point for literacy materials, technology, and support.
More about this project
The project ran for 8 weekly sessions in Tullamore library between early November and late December 2025.
Sessions were informal, relaxed , conversation-based, and combined
reading,
discussions,
vocabulary-building,
word diaries, and
signposting to further learning.
The project will become a template for an ongoing group in Tullamore library and may be replicated in other branches.
