About this project

This project empowered deaf people by creating a clear, accessible Irish sign language video glossary of car insurance terms.

More about this project

Linguists, deaf educators, and community members

  • identified car insurance terms,

  • checked signs,

  • produced videos, and

  • ensured the glossary was clear and accessible.

52 car insurance terms were translated into Irish sign language. Each term is presented in a video explaining its meaning and real-life application.

The glossary is being delivered as an online resource through the Irish Deaf Society website, available at any time.

The project made complex financial and legal language easy to understand.

“Language should never be a barrier to understanding your rights. This Irish Sign Language-English Car insurance glossary, as an add-on to the IDS ISL-English Dictionary, opens doors, breaks down walls, and gives Deaf people the power to navigate life with confidence and equality.” — Irish deaf society
