About this project

This project helped  adults with intellectual disabilities use community services while developing literacy, numeracy, digital,  art,  and woodworking skills.

Learners designed and created a map of the Letterkenny area, highlighting facilities and services that are of interest to them.

More about this project

Numeracy and digital literacy delivery ran from March to December 2025 at Donegal Horizons.

Donegal ETB provided the woodwork classes and a literacy tutor from May to August 2025.

Learners

  • researched local amenities,

  • visited services,

  • gathered information,

  • took photos,

  • calculated distances, and

  • planned materials and costs.

Learners designed plaques in art class, one for each of the local amenities they included on the map. They engraved plaques through wood burning.

Donegal Horizons staff also helped learners create a booklet detailing their progress throughout the course. The booklet has been professionally printed and distributed to learners.

"I really enjoyed working on our community mapping project. I was able to go to woodwork and help make the finished piece and we did literacy classes in centre where I was able to learn spellings and grammar.” — quote from a learner
